How to choose the Best Dyker Heights Bus Tour

A bus tour is one of the most convenient ways to visit Dyker Heights.

But it can also be confusing. There are 20+ operators to choose from.

A quick search on GetYourGuide can show dozens of different tours.

So how do you choose the best one? And are some tours actually better than others?

Here are a few things to know.

  • Most tours take you to the same main attraction.
  • You are going to the same Dyker Heights neighborhood and seeing the same Christmas displays.
  • The main differences are the guide, the bus, the amount of time you spend there and what else is included.
  • Some tours take you directly from Midtown Manhattan to Dyker Heights and back.
  • Others include additional stops, such as Brooklyn Bridge or a view of the New York skyline on the way back.

Some tours also include gifts, souvenirs or hot chocolate – honesty, they are not worth the extra cost.

The bus does matter, though.

It can get very cold in New York in December, and you will be walking outside for quite a while. A comfortable, heated bus is an absolute must.

My biggest tip: go earlier

I would look for tours leaving around 4:00–4:15 PM.

Holiday traffic gets worse as the evening progresses, and Dyker Heights gets increasingly crowded later in the evening.

Going earlier gives you a better chance of reaching Dyker Heights before the biggest crowds build up.

What about A Slice of Brooklyn?

A Slice of Brooklyn is probably the best-known name in Dyker Heights tours.

They have been running their Christmas Lights Tour since 2006 and use Brooklyn-based guides.

But they are also on the more expensive side. Their tour costs around $65 per person.

Is it worth paying the premium? I don’t think you need to.

If another operator has excellent reviews and costs $20 less, I’d happily take the cheaper option.

What we booked

Dyker Heights Bus Tour
Dyker Heights Bus Tour

We booked a tour from Tour America.

It had excellent reviews, a large number of reviews and was offering a 20% discount when we booked.

We paid $44 per person for the round trip, which I thought was a bargain.

For comparison, A Slice of Brooklyn was charging $65 for its tour.

So here’s what I recommend:

Search “Dyker Heights” (you can click on the link) on GetYourGuide and compare the tours.

Look for:

  • 4.3+ rating
  • 200+ reviews
  • A departure around 4:00–4:15 PM
  • A heated and comfortable bus
  • A good cancellation policy
  • And, most importantly, a good price
  • If two tours look almost identical, take the cheaper one.

There is no need to overthink it. The houses are what you came to see. And they are spectacular.

Dress warm. Enjoy Dyker Heights.
